{"id":2901,"date":"2007-12-14T12:59:49","date_gmt":"2007-12-14T07:29:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ravikiran.com\/blog\/classic\/200712\/socialisms-about-turn\/"},"modified":"2007-12-14T12:59:49","modified_gmt":"2007-12-14T07:29:49","slug":"socialisms-about-turn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ravikiran.com\/blog\/classic\/200712\/socialisms-about-turn\/","title":{"rendered":"Socialism&#8217;s About Turn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aadisht <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aadisht.net\/2007\/12\/13\/nationalising-rivers\/\">points to<\/a>\u00a0the latest version of the old bad idea: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.indianexpress.com\/story\/249795.html\">Nationalising rivers<\/a>.\u00a0 This is the time to pimp my <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ravikiran.com\/blog\/vintage\/200210\/sell-the-kaveri\/\">old solution<\/a> to the Kaveri dispute which still has a better chance of working than everything else that is being tried now.<\/p>\n<p>In this post, however, I want to ask supporters of this idea: Why do you think nationalising rivers will work? This is old style socialism of course, which advocates central planning, and it does not work of course.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>But even for it to work <em>in theory,<\/em>\u00a0 the central planners have to be separated from the people on whose behalf they are making decisions &#8211;\u00a0&#8220;separated&#8221; in the same sense that judges are\u00a0\u00a0isolated from popular pressure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Take the current example.\u00a0 Nationalising rivers is a good idea only if the decisions are taken on objective considerations, i.e. which land requires water, which land will yield more, which land can grow other crops that do not require water, etc.\u00a0 If decisions are determined by considerations\u00a0like which state has more votes, which state will go to the elections next, which state the party ruling at the Centre is going to fight a close election in, etc.\u00a0 things are not going to work.<\/p>\n<p>Keep this fact in mind the next time someone tells you that the problem with Socialism was too little Democracy. It was not. By its very design, Socialism was an anti-democratic idea. Socialism and Democracy could not have worked together.<\/p>\n<p>This also explains why I am\u00a0more sceptical of the new Left than the old Left. The old Left at least identified the problem properly and provided the wrong solution to it.
