Indira Gandhi declared the emergency after losing an election related court-case right?
Who was her lawyer? Very easy. No googling.

Nani Palkhiwala?
It was Soli Sorabjee, wasn’t it? She had used govt of india jeeps for her election campaign. There’s a nice book “Judgement” by Kuldip Nayar on this case and the emergency. Much gossip, hearsay and rumour. Like reading the TOI. 🙂 [Nayar was jailed during the emergency]
I too think it was Nani Palkhiwala. He had advised her against imposing the emergency and had told her that he would win the case in appeal. But on the advice of her inner circle (son Sanjay Gandhi, Siddhartha Shankar Ray and others), she went through with it. As soon as the emergency was imposed, Palkhiwala refused to fight her case and this led to him being harassed off the Tata boards.
Palkivala fought against Mrs. Gandhi.
Yes, it was Nani Palkhiwala. He represented her in the case, but when she imposed the emergency, he returned the brief in protest and refused to take up the case any more. Truly a man of principles.
Anyone knows if Nani Palkhiwala is still around?? Please respond.
Thanks.
