Nilu accuses three of us, i.e. me, Yazad and Gaurav of having developed a patronizing attitude bordering on condescension. The problem, you see is that we are so smart that we sometimes find it difficult to get down to the appropriate level to explain things to you people.

http://www.prayatna.typepad.com – Are the rich getting richer and the poor poorer?
Do you have anything to say on this?
The study says: “The rich are getting richer while the poor remain poor. If you doubt it, ponder these numbers from the US, a country widely considered meritocratic, where talent and hard work are thought to be enough to propel anyone through the ranks of the rich. In 1979, the top 1% of the US population earned, on average, 33.1 times as much as the lowest 20%. In 2000, this multiplier had grown to 88.5. If inequality is growing in the US, what does this mean for other countries?”
I don’t know how the study reached that conclusion. The mulitipler can increase from 33.1 to 88.5 even if poor are getting richer, because rich could be getting richer faster! The correct conclusion is that gap between rich and poor is increasing!
I don’t know whether you know that in US wage earners have to pay 15% in social security and medicare taxes (7.5% out of their own pocket with equal contribution by the employers). This can reduce the incentive to work hard for the poor. Also, employers are forced to give healthcare to the employees. And then there is minimum wage act. There are so many restrictions on entering various professions requiring permits, licenses and state-mandates exams etc. For example, you require a license to drive a taxi or to open a hair cutting salon. All this reduces work opportunities for the poor people. Also, public education system in US is under the control of teachers lobby. Poor people have no choice to move to a different public school if the school in their district is not performing well. Various vouchers initiatives have failed. High property, sales and import duties cause goods and services to become costly. All this may be holding poor people back. I say give everybody freedom to make their economic decisions and they will prosper!
Lakshmi, no I don’t have anything to say about it. I cannot get myself worried about a situation where “poor” means “has only one car” and “has to eat at McDonalds”.
hahaha…:-)))
I have the same problem with Americans….The teacher I used to work with always complained that there was only one printer for the math department due to lack of resources….The stationery supplies, number of computer terminals and materials available in her room would be more than what was available in my whole school in India.
It’s called libertarian paternalism
Respected Sir,
I have the honor to submit the following few lines for your kind consideration and sympathetic action.
1. I have passed my Graduation in B.Sc. (Physical Education, Health Education and Sports) from Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra in 2000-2002 securing 67.42% marks.
2. I have passed my Post Graduation in M.Sc. (Sports Sciences) from Punjabi University, Patiala in 2003-2005 securing 75.55% marks.
3. I also have cleared my UGC – NET examination in Physical Education in December 2004 and I have the eligibility for the lectureship in Universities/Institutions throughout the country.
I am facing a great problem that wherever I am applying for the job as a lecturer in Physical Education, they are not considering me, saying that I am not fulfilling the education qualification. Even a specialist goes from Punjabi University, Patiala; they also repeat the same words. If the colleges fall under your precious University are not considering it, then what to say about other Universities and Colleges.
So, It is my humble request to yours good self that Colleges under your University should be advised to consider a ratio of lecturer from M.Sc. (Sports Sciences) and M.P.Ed. Extreme.
4. In the department of Sports Sciences, the faculty members are much better and highly qualified than the Physical Education. Our faculty members are listed below:
S.No Name Designation Qualification Experience

7. The curriculum of M.Sc. (Sports Sciences) is much/more better than those of M.P.Ed. From academic point of view.
8. After completing M.Sc. (Sports Sciences), the students can be more helpful to the athletes from Dietary, Biochemical & Physiological changes, Body Movements, Anthropometrics, Nutritional & Psychological point of view. Although training is quite important in different sportive events but scientific approach training is much & more helpful to the athletes. In developing countries the Athletes are first brought to the lab to make them fit for field training, whereas in India all the coaches will take them to the field training and when they show in ability to do that training then they bring to the Scientific Lab. That is the only reason we are failing in competitive sports day by day because our approach is wrong.
So it is my humble request that every Physical Training Institutes, there should be a combination of both Coaches and Sports Scientists for the better improvement and performance of sports persons. In the last, we request yours good-self that students, who are clearing M.Sc. (Sports Sciences) from Punjabi University, Patiala should be placed in different Colleges of Physical Education or Wherever the student of Physical Education exists to improve the performance and for their better position at National/Inter National level please.
Thanking You,
Yours Sincerely,
