Since we have been talking of gender differences, here is some more. Every year we see headlines like “Girls outshine boys” in CBSE/ICSE/State board results. The basis for the headline is that the pass percentage is better among girls than among boys. Can you tell me the real reason for the gap?
Hint: It involves discrimination against girls. Also, ignore the gap mentioned for CBSE results in the linked article. That is most probably not statistically significant. Usually the gap in state board exams is much higher – and that is another hint.
Okay, that’s simple. Girls who are poor students are taken out of school much earlier than boys of the same quality. That’s why we see higher percentage of girls students passing the board exams.
On second thoughts, could it be because young girls are not allowed to go out and do something other than studies? Somehow, I think the first reason is better.

So, not only do girls graduate in greater percentages, many of them are so good as to be over-represented at the highest performance levels. This would mean there is a self-selection bias in play here.
Eswaran, I think the most plausible reason is the first one, i.e.
Poorer kids flunk more often. Poorer girls drop out more often than boys. Ergo girls who’d have otherwise flunked end up dropping out. Of course, it is not just girls from poorer families who drop out more often, but I suspect the proportion is higher. Which is why I suppose the effect practically disappears when it comes to ICSE/CBSE, which are usually opted for by the middle class.
My claim has to be proved, of course. It can be done by verifying dropout rates in earlier classes and pass rates by income.

More than economic status, geography plays an important role in this. The overall pass percentages is usually higher in the cities than it is in the rural areas. And the proportion of women in rural schools is much lesser for obvious reasons.
A good way to get the real dope (percentage statistics can be such a deceptive thing) would be to compare actual numbers of how many boys and girls actually take the exams. See if there is a large gap in the numbers.
MadMan is right; the pass percentage is higher with girls because they’re a much more focussed group; if you’re a Indian girl in school, you’re obviously either rich, urban, really motivated, have literate parents, have a good environment, or some combination of these.
In essence, the ‘bulk’ category of students, i.e. people who do just about well enough to pass school (who incidentally happen to be the ones who need it the most) comprise mostly of boys, because of motivation, and need. I haven’t seen too many job openings suited for girls which involve “class-12 pass”; while boys can get into the police, courier service, etc.
There are more girls in the top 10 or 20 and this proves that girls are better than boys. they are a superioir species and hats of to them for doing well
The selection-bias argument is appealing in theory, but may not be supported by facts. I dont know for the nation as a whole, but in TN at least the number of girls writing Plus-2 exams exceeded the number of boys this year and last year too. I read this in a recent news clipping.
Girls also took the lion’s share of top-rank holders. That is not going to be easy to argue using selection-bias.

What happens to these girls when they appear for Competitions like JEE, IAS, engineering and medical entrance. I dont think girls really outshine boys.
We were asking ourselves the same questions in the UK a couple of years ago.
We don’t have many – or any – of the disparities other commenters mention. So I think the ladies are just more clever.

First of all i agree with Vega about the grammar point but can’t people just live with the fact that males and females are as clever as each other does there have to be a smarter sex? If you said yes to that then i will leave you with a question how many female geniuses in the course of history can you think of then think about how many male geniuses there are in history? … methinks men win some how but i think we should just admit we are as smart as each other.

You may be quicker but you obviously can’t spell that well. Also your grammar is terrible and you are not really showing how “great” your sex are by writing that comment, so in future do not bother writing a comment instead get the more intelligent person of your sex to write it because there are many clever females out there as many as men. Ok. So after reading everything I have come to some conclusions. Both Men and Women are equal, true. Some ups and some downs on both. In Gym Ive seen most boys do an average of 0-3 pull ups. And most girls 0 as well. But then about 3 or 4 males out of the class managed to do 10 or so. And on the female side, would have 2 or 3 do just as many if not more. In class, 5 females made the highest score in Algebra, in Science, 3 males did. The score changes, the numbers change. There is no question of who is better unless you start giving names. And even then ‘Better’ is an opinion. Its not fact, you cant prove shit. The human race is selective. Not everyone is the same. Where are you going to put the trans-genders? Exactly. The question there in cannot be bothered with. Thank you.
