There is an incident associated with these words. How many of you knew about it? I remembered the incident yesterday and was surprised how completely I had forgotten about it.

  1. Long time silent reader here….

Interesting post for a trivia junkie like me. The background behind why this incident happened the way it did is interesting. In 1981, Egyptian President Anwar Al Sadat was assassinated by army personnel as he was inspecting an army parade. He was shot by Egyptian army soldiers from a truck that was rolling slowly past as part of the parade. Here is a video from that incident – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwQL3N57TQE

Since then, armies all over the world have adopted the practice of carrying unloaded weapons during such parades/guard of honors. So that is why that naval rating tried to bludgeon Rajiv Gandhi over his head with the rifle, because there were no bullets in the gun.

  2. vividly remember this incident.saw it on tv when i was a small kid. came back to my mind when Mr.Rahul Gandhi came to my town a few days ago to cmpaign for the local inc mp candidate. jai ho congress

  3. hope i have a thousand vote, so that i can vote for R.Gandhi to PM office when he is fit. atleast better than some who instigate communal disharmony
